Undress to Decolonise (2022) first appeared at Hidden, my MA degree show in 2022, at which point I had already confirmed my plans to pursue a PhD studying the cultural images of South American camelids. This interactive installation served as a testing ground for my PhD, utilising the methodology and medium I explored during my MA. In retrospect, it’s interesting to reflect on my initial awareness of camelids, including Ai Weiwei’s use of alpacas as innuendos in his art and performative lifestyle, Guaman Poma’s chronicle on Spanish colonisation in Peru which features camelids, and how alpacas have been anthropomorphised in Japanese manga and other cartoon representations that have spread globally. I also created takeaway flyers, allowing the audience to bring the essence of the installation home with them.
